In the summer months, railway transport couldn't be more appealing and evocative of the past than the Shakespeare Express. This magnificent steam train travels between Stratford upon Avon and Birmingham on Sundays, along the original Great Western Railway. For cyclists and ramblers, the rural beauty of the Greenway and the canal paths are unsurpassed. There is even a historic chain-winch ferry crossing the river, between the Avon Bank Gardens and the Recreation Ground.

Coventry Airport is located just 31 km / 19 miles to the north-east of Stratford upon Avon and is connected by the Warwick Bypass. Cheap flights are available to a limited selection of destinations, including Alicante, Jersey, Malaga, Oxford and Salzburg. Birmingham International Airport (BHX) is also within reach and stands some 43 km / 27 miles to the north.

Travellers driving to Stratford upon Avon from London and the south-east will likely arrive on the M40 motorway, leaving at Junction 15. There is so much to see outside of the town, and so if you bring your own set of wheels, it will make travelling around at your own pace a whole lot easier. The Stratford Northern Bypass (A422) keeps a lot of traffic out of the city centre, as does the park and ride system.

Getting around the town using bus transport couldn't be easier, with open-top City Sightseeing buses travelling along a set circuit of the town, passing the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) and the five Shakespeare attractions along the way. Sightseeing buses run throughout the year, operating as frequently as every 15 minutes in the summer, and stopping off at sights en route. Alternatively, town buses are also on hand and connect outlying towns and villages, such as Broadway, Coventry, Kenilworth, Leamington Spa, Warwick, Wilmcote, Wixford and Wootton Wawen.

Stratford upon Avon's railway station is situated along Station Road, on the westerly side of the town centre and easily reached by foot. Direct services provided by rail transport are fairly limited, with the main routes including Banbury, Birmingham, Leamington Spa, London, Warwick and Worcestershire. Each summer, in July and August, look out for the seasonal Shakespeare Express steam train between Stratford and Birmingham Snow Hill.
